National Center for Youth Law

The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) advances justice by defending the rights of children and improving the systems impacting their lives. We focus on complex challenges that disproportionately impact children and communities of color and on solutions that require multiple public systems to change their policies, practices and culture.

NCYL’s mission includes advancing social, economic, and racial justice for children, and we are committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion. We embrace and encourage the collective sum of individual differences, life experiences, knowledge, innovation, self-expression, unique capabilities, and talent our employees invest in their work that represents a significant part of not only our culture, but our reputation and organization's success.

Position

NCYL seeks an experienced, mission-driven leader to serve as our Director of Communications, Branding, and Marketing. Reporting to NCYL’s Executive Director, the Director of Communications will lead efforts to increase awareness of our work and enhance the impact of our work by reaching and engaging diverse audiences and attracting high quality media coverage. Working closely with the organization’s executive leadership, teams, campaign leaders, program staff, and development department, the Director will provide leadership in communications strategy and media relations, utilizing both traditional and new media to promote public messages for NCYL and its program areas.

Essential Functions

1. Strategic planning for communications, branding, and marketing

  • Develop communications and marketing plans for NCYL and for our organization’s program campaigns to increase public awareness of our efforts, enhance our advocacy efforts, shape public opinion, and catalyze, connect, and convene target audiences through traditional communications, message development, web presence, and social media
  • Lead NCYL’s organization-wide rebranding efforts and engage staff across NCYL in this process
  • Determine appropriate communications channels and tactics to disseminate newsletters, advance and promote campaigns, publicize events, broaden and engage diverse audiences, and demonstrate thought leadership on NCYL issues
  • Align public facing materials and staff around consistent language and messaging when describing NCYL’s work
  • Understand and leverage trends in marketing and communications especially in the nonprofit space

2. Media Relations

  • Spearhead multi-media campaigns to increase awareness of NCYL’s work and extend the impact of programmatic work using messaging that resonates with our target audiences
  • Work with local, regional, and national press to pitch stories, promote local events, maximize media coverage, and enhance NCYL’s visibility in communities in various states and nationwide
  • Produce press materials, including press releases, advisories, memos, and talking points that translate complex legal issues into compelling, audience friendly messages
  • Lead rapid response communications efforts, particularly at the intersection of issues in which NCYL works
  • Increase coverage of issues and messages by cultivating and maintaining relationships with key reporters, editors, and producers
  • Prepare staff, volunteers, and other spokespeople for media appearances by providing training and talking points

3. Digital Communications

  • Supervise the development and management of dynamic content for NCYL’s website and social media platforms
  • Plan and oversee social media campaigns that help to raise the organization’s profile and promote our program work

4. Publications

  • External Communications: Produce major reports, op-eds, blog posts, external newsletters, annual reports, and other publications as needed
  • Internal Communications: Keep staff and board members apprised of NCYL’s work via internal newsletters

5.  Communications staff development and internal staff leadership

  • Facilitate NCYL’s monthly all-staff meeting
  • Supervise the External Relations Coordinator and work with program staff to ensure that the communications infrastructure is well-run, efficient, and organized

About Us

The National Center for Youth Law believes in the incredible power, agency, and wisdom of youth.

For more than 50 years, we have worked to center the voices and experiences of youth blocked from educational, health, and social well-being opportunities, particularly Black youth and youth of color, LGBTQ youth, disabled youth, immigrant youth, and youth in child welfare and juvenile justice systems.

We are transforming systems – classrooms, courts, the justice system, and health care spaces – to extend equity, dignity and care for children and youth.

Our Vision and Mission

Our vision is a world in which every child thrives and has a full and fair opportunity to achieve the future they envision for themselves.

Our purpose is to amplify youth power, dismantle racism and other structural inequities, and build just policies, practices, and culture that center youth.

Our mission is to center youth voices and experiences through impact litigation, policy advocacy, collaboration and research that fundamentally transforms our nation's approach to education, health, immigration, foster care, and youth justice.
