Department Summary

The Practice and Professionalism Center is dedicated to the shared ideals of the legal profession, including service to clients, ethical conduct, increasing competence and respect of the legal system and pursuit of the public good.  The Center focuses on providing assistance with developing our members’ practice, resolving ethical dilemmas, providing ideas on improving firm management and help meeting pro bono commitments.

The Immigration Justice Campaign is a collaboration between AILA and the American Immigration Council. The Justice Campaign is a broad-based project to activate a nationwide community of lawyers and other supporters to defend immigrants from deportation and to advocate for due process and justice for non-citizens targeted for immigration enforcement. A central piece of the Immigration Justice Campaign’s work involves recruiting, training, and mentoring pro bono volunteers so that they can represent detained immigrants around the country.

Position Summary

The Program Assistant will provide administrative and logistical support to all aspects of the Justice Campaign’s innovative mentorship program, which is a critical, core component of the Justice Campaign’s mission to increase access to counsel and due process for immigrants detained while fighting their cases. The mentorship program centers on the provision of group mentorship provided by experienced AILA members as well as technical assistance from in-house Justice Campaign team members. The Program Assistant is tasked with ensuring smooth operational and logistical functioning of the mentorship program, including organizing, scheduling and tracking the mentorship and the technical assistance provided to Justice Campaign volunteer attorneys and serving as a key point of contact as volunteers and mentors navigate their relationship in delivering quality legal services to detained immigrants. In addition, the Program Assistant will work with team members to research, evaluate, and improve upon the Justice Campaign’s innovative models with the objective of better scaling access to counsel for detained immigrants. The Program Assistant will also provide general administrative support to the Justice Campaign Team.  The Program Assistant will report to the Counsel of Pro Bono Programs.
