Chief Operating Officer for Systems, Finance, HR and Legal Compliance

Position Location: Brooklyn, NY strongly preferred

 The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together CPD/A) promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 50 partner organizations in more than 38 states, Puerto Rico, and D.C., and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. CPD/A is a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

We seek an experienced senior leader to anchor and build out our core infrastructure capacity, including finance, legal compliance, and human resources. The COO will directly supervise director-level staff of growing teams in each of these areas and help envision and grow the capacity needed to meet our ambitious mission. This person will have a deep and demonstrated commitment to social justice and will have experience working at both c3 and c4 organizations.

Primary Responsibilities

The Director will have primary responsibility for work including:

  • Supervision of CPD/A's Director of Finance, and ensuring the effective management of all of CPD/A's core finance functions in coordination with CPD/A's Senior Management, HR, Operations and Development Teams. 

  • Supervision of CPD/A's Legal Compliance Director, and ensuring 100% legal compliance for CPD, CPDA and all of our hosted partner organizations.

  • Vision and development of CPD/A's legal compliance support for partners and affiliates, in coordination with our Legal Compliance Director.

  • Supervision of CPD/A's Director of Talent and Equity and oversight and growth of our Human Resources Team, to ensure seamless excellence of CPD/A's overall functioning, and to develop effective systems for organizational planning and evaluation, high-quality supervision, integration of our commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in our internal practices, and administration of our staff union contract.

  • Supervision of CPD/A’s Director of Technology, who coordinates all technology-related infrastructure for CPD/A staff and growing support for major projects that engage our affiliates.

  • Support of our Senior Leadership Team and close collaboration with our Co-Executive Directors to ensure alignment of infrastructure to our strategic vision and mission.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

  • At least 10 years’ experience in progressive campaigns with community-based organizations, primarily on issues with explicit racial justice framing;

  • At least five years’ experience supervising staff and managing teams.

  • Experience working across departments or teams within a complex organization;

  • Experience managing large programs and projects;

  • Success designing systems that support mission-aligned work and which facilitate effective sharing of information internally;

  • Success as independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;

  • Fundraising experience;

  • Systems Management experience;

  • Financial management experience;

  • Legal compliance experience

  • Preference for candidates based in New York. Exceptions may be made for exceptional candidates.
