Position Summary:
Blue Heron Nature Preserve in Atlanta, GA seeks an Education Director to manage, cultivate, and expand their place-based environmental education programming. The ideal candidate will understand and embrace the values and principles of the Reggio Emilia philosophy, have proven experience implementing an emergent curriculum, and be passionate about upholding and communicating the Preserve’s mission to “create a personal experience with nature through conservation, education, research and advocacy.” The Educational Director will report to Blue Heron Nature Preserve’s Executive Director. This is a full-time, 40 hour + position. Benefits include paid vacation and sick leave. Some nights, holidays, and weekends are required.
Major Responsibilities:
The Education Director is responsible for ensuring the integrity, vitality, implementation and expansion of education programming and initiatives at the Preserve. The major responsibilities involved include but are not limited to:
- Upholding and communicating Blue Heron Nature Preserve’s educational philosophy as it relates to the mission and values of the organization.
- Increasing revenue and number of educational offerings
- Developing partnerships with schools and other organizations.
- Working closely with Blue Heron’s on-site partners, The Atlanta Audubon Society and The Amphibian Foundation, to expand current program partnerships and cultivate new partnership opportunities.
- Coordinating, creating, and teaching new programs
- Recruiting, training, evaluating, and communicating openly with a small staff of contract environmental educators.
- Working closely with and overseeing the work of the Community and Public Programs manager.
- Working closely with senior staff at the Preserve, to ensure education programs reflect the interconnectedness of the organization.
- Serve as the Director for summer and school break day camps.
Other Duties:
The Education Director will also support the mission of Blue Heron Nature Preserve by:
- Coordinate/teach and train staff to teach all onsite and outreach programming such as after school, scout programs, school programs, homeschool programs, etc.
- Coordinate and teach professional development workshops for educators
- Teach after school programs, school field trip programs, and other education programs as needed to establish familiarity with our community and grow an understanding of how our programs are impacting the community.
- Represent the Preserve at environmental and educational events
- Report to the PROPS committee, submit a quarterly education report to the BHNP board of directors and attend majority of meetings
- Research and apply for educational grants
- Participate in membership cultivation and engagement activities as needed.
- Manage the education budget
- Coordinate and manage volunteers, assist with volunteer days and events
- Advertise and market programming to the public
- Organize, schedule, and serve as summer camp and school break camp director, hire and train support staff and counselors
- Post educational information on the website, BHNP newsletter and other BHNP social media outlets
- Document, record, and evaluate education programming using methods developed in Reggio Emilia schools.
- Represent BHNP at local, national and international conferences. Submit conference presentations and present at conferences at least once per year.
- Maintain Blue Heron’s membership in the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia, the North American Association for Environmental Education, and the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance.
Qualifications:
Must Have: Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental education, biology or another life science, arts, or equivalent. 5 + years of experience teaching environmental education in a non-formal setting. 2+ years experience managing and training education staff. 2+ years experience as a day camp director or assistant director. Current Adult, child and infant CPR/First Aid. Familiarity with values and principles of Reggio Emilia, place-based education, and with implementing an emergent curriculum.
Preferred: Master’s degree in education, environmental education, environmental management or equivalent. Ability to speak spanish, WFA or WFR certification, Lifeguard certification
