SUMMARY

Heluna Health/Public Health Foundation Enterprises (PHFE) invites applications for the full-time (1.0 FTE) position of Clinical Laboratory Coordinator. Bridge HIV is a grant-funded research unit affiliated with the San Francisco Department of Public Health and the University of California San Francisco. Bridge HIV has been searching for new and innovative ways to fight HIV/AIDS since the onset of the epidemic in the early 1980s. The Bridge HIV Investigators are global leaders in HIV vaccine and prevention science, epidemiology of HIV infection, HIV medication adherence, combination HIV prevention strategies, and HIV research training methods. Under the direct supervision of the Medical Director, Clinical Research, the Clinical Laboratory Coordinator will be part of a dynamic team conducting HIV preventive vaccine studies, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) studies (including oral and injectable medications, rectal microbicides, and vaginal rings), and other studies of biomedical HIV prevention strategies. The Clinical Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for daily lab operations, lab and clinic maintenance, and biosafety and infection-control and provides support for specimen collection, processing, and shipping of specimens to local and central laboratories for analysis and oversees tracking of laboratory results to share with study participants. The Coordinator also performs point-of-care diagnostic testing such as urinalysis, urine pregnancy testing, and HIV rapid testing; and will conduct clinical research visits. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable clinical and administrative experience in preparation for careers in medicine, nursing, public health, and lab management. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Daily laboratory operations
* Assist with phlebotomy and specimen collection as needed
* Schedule, process, ship and track specimens to be processes by local and national laboratories
* Prepare lab packets, including tubes for blood collection and relevant requisitions and checklists
* Troubleshoot and consult with staff about lab-related issues and projects and communicate with local and Network laboratories
* QC and deliver shipments for STI testing to local public health laboratory

Lab Maintenance
* Track inventory of clinical and lab supplies; maintain inventory management database; work with the Administrative Coordinator to order supplies as needed;
* Coordinate stocking of lab and exam rooms
* Maintain laboratory documentation (e.g. logs for shipping, temperature monitoring, QC/QA)
* Maintain inventory of stored specimens in -80C freezer, using LDMS software to document storage and shipment of specimens; serve as site-administrator for LDMS software and train users.
* Assist the Regulatory Affairs Associate in maintaining records; work with the Administrative Coordinator on updates/renewal of lab-related licensure, accreditation, equipment maintenance contracts, etc.; updates memoranda of understanding
* Serve as administrator for off-protocol STI testing database

Infection control and training
* Train and evaluate study staff in phlebotomy, performance of waived laboratory tests, specimen processing and shipping
* In collaboration with the Regulatory Associate, implement lab quality control and quality assurance measures
* Collaborate with clinical and regulatory staff to develop, review, and update site-specific laboratory protocols and SOPs

Conducting Study Visits, Counseling, and Participant Education
* Obtain informed consent, interview study participants, and complete detailed data forms
* Provide risk reduction counseling
* Use computer scheduling software and Access database to schedule appointments and maintain updated participant information
* Participate in clinical team meetings
* Maintain contact with participants via phone/email and assist with a range of study retention activities
* Provide appropriate referrals and assist volunteers with navigating social services in the San Francisco Bay Area

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* A Bachelors of Art/Science degree
* One year experience working in a lab or clinic/research setting
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, and willingness and ability to learn new computer programs as needed
* Excellent written and oral communication. Must be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with co-workers and participants
* Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in work
* Willingness to learn various specimen collection methods and processing (e.g. rectal/cervical secretion sample processing)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Training in shipping of dangerous goods and IATA regulations (certification)
* HIV pre- and post-test counseling certification
* Phlebotomy certification, at least one year of experience in an outpatient or inpatient setting, or willingness to be trained in phlebotomy.
* HIV rapid-testing certification
* Knowledge of an sensitivity to diverse racial/ethnic communities, particularly communities of color as well as gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender communities
* Spanish-speaking
