Early Head Start Health and Nutrition Specialist

Job Title: Early Head Start Health and Nutrition Specialist                   

Department:  Child Care Resource and Referral

Salary: Based on experience – Salaried, Exempt

Position Summary: The EHS CCP Health and Nutrition Specialist will track and monitor the health care of infants and toddlers including those with disabilities. He/She will plan and support child and family activities to support healthy weight and moderate to vigorous movement. He/She will, provide health and nutrition education to staff, enrolled parents and family members. He/She will utilize the data management system to track immunizations, EPSDT, developmental screening, and all child health and nutrition requirements as indicated in the Head Start Performance Standards.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that all enrolled children are screened and on a schedule or age appropriate preventive and primary health care within 45 days of the child’s entry and as services become due.
  2. Ensure all Health related mandates are met yearly and implement a system to proactively address any health barriers for children and families.
  3. Works collaboratively with the Family Support Coordinators/Managers to arrange any medical, dental examinations and immunizations.
  4. Develop and implement a process of on-going monitoring, including regular and frequent site visits to assure each enrolled child receives required health, dental examinations and sensory screenings as required by Head Start Performance Standards.
  5. Collaborate with other hub specialists to partner with parents to arrange re-screening and further diagnostic testing, examination and treatment for each child found to have medical or dental problems.
  6. Responsible for recording the health progress of each child enrolled in the Child Plus web-base management system.
  7. Provide monthly health tracking data and progress reports on children for all required deadlines to each provider for review.
  8. Collect and analyze health data for use in program planning and decision making
  9. Perform regular monitoring and review of children’s files.
  10. Serve as a liaison with community programs providing health related services Support each site in developing community resources in the area of child health.
  11. Assist families in accessing and navigating the Affordable Health Care Act system.
  12. Provide onsite consultations to site directors and Family Support Coordinators/Mangers as it relates to the delivery and record keeping of the child health and nutrition services.
  13. Monitor and track the provision of health care services to children.
  14. Coordinate the Health and Wellness committee for the hub sites and/or participate in DECAL’s Health Services Advisory Committee.
  15. Oversee the process of managing and dispensing of medication, acquiring doctor’s instructions and parental consent to administer.
  16. Coordinate with a registered dietician to support each child’s nutritional needs.
  17. Maintain records of medications dispensed and review these records with providers.
  18. Assure all medication is properly labelled and stored.
  19. Conduct annual Mediation administration training.
  20. Accept other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Baccalaureate in Public Health, Health Administration, Nursing, Child Development or related field
  • Minimum of three years with public health or in an Early Childhood Setting, preferably Head Start/Early Head Start.
  • Knowledge of Head Start/ Early Head Start program model; regulations and Standards in early child development preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Have an understanding and knowledge of the Family Child Care standards, Child Care standards, Head Start Performance Standards, and other Early Head Start regulations
  • Knowledge of community-based social service organizations and agencies
  • Ability to interact effectively with Family Child Care providers, center staff, parents, children, staff, and the public in a multi-ethnic environment
  • Must be comfortable working with diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds of the communities and must be able to effectively communicate with children and families of the community
  • Possess a valid Georgia Driver’s License and have access to an insured motor vehicle
  • Must be willing to work outside of traditional work hours (evenings/weekends)
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds and sit on the floor and interact with children
