Founded in 2009, Repair the World’s mission is to make meaningful service a defining element of American Jewish life. Repair seeks to propel service to the forefront of Jewish life and to enable individuals and the Jewish community to be indispensable partners in the national and global service movements. Across the country, Repair engages the Jewish community, and young adults in particular, in a range of volunteer opportunities and issue-based campaigns that connect them to volunteering alongside their neighbors to strengthen their communities.

Each year, Repair the World mobilizes tens of thousands of volunteers in tackling pressing local needs and equips communities and partners to do the same. Repair’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, Miami, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and New York City. Through this growing initiative, each city supports a cohort of fellows (ages 21-26) who make a year-long service commitment to Repair the World. Fellows work closely with local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and educational opportunities. Repair the World also prioritizes its work as a platform organization, inspiring and equipping hundreds of national and local organizations committed to offering young adults meaningful Jewish service opportunities.

Repair the World is headquartered in New York City and has 40+ staff members. The organization is governed by a 19-member Board of Directors and has an operating budget of approximately $6.7 million.

This Chief Development Officer position is a new and critically important role, developed in response to the completion of a five-year strategic growth plan. This plan envisions deepening national and local philanthropic support to expand Repair the World’s signature Communities program to 18 cities, and to reach 180,000 participants around the country across all of its programs. Repair the World seeks a proven, dynamic and growth-minded executive to lead fundraising efforts, hone the strategic plan, and enhance the organization’s development infrastructure. A significant focus will be on developing major donor relationships and implementing strategies for foundation cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Strengthening an already vibrant culture of philanthropy across the organization and building the development team will be a primary responsibility of the CDO. The CDO will serve as a key member of Repair the World’s Executive Team and will report to and partner closely with CEO David Eisner to design significant multi-year funding opportunities that are essential to Repair’s mission and strategic priorities. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success in building an organization’s development capacity, as well as substantive experience securing major gifts from foundations.  They will also have demonstrated organizational leadership in coordinating between internal program teams and external program partners to secure gifts giving targeted support to partnership-based program strategies.

Strategy and Engagement

  • Design and implement a development strategy for creating and/or expanding philanthropic support to help Repair engage a larger and broader audience.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of current and prospective major donor accounts with a focus on foundation and institutional support; maintain existing donor relationships and deepen those alliances through regular communications and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with and introduce Repair’s strategic partners to unique funding opportunities for successful existing initiatives and new programs and projects.
  • Serve as the thought partner and primary staff support to the CEO regarding his role in fundraising. Monitor and direct his efforts in stewarding existing relationships and develop and support strategies to reach new prospective donors.
  • Work closely with City Directors in developing and implementing a strategic fundraising program that includes ways to deepen and diversify the funding base in local cities.
  • Develop clear expectations, processes, systems, metrics, and performance measures to guide development goals and efforts.
  • Maintain deep familiarity with the funding environment, especially in the Jewish community, to position Repair the World ahead of major funding changes or trends.

Team-Building and Organizational Leadership

  • Develop and support a vibrant internal culture of philanthropy in partnership with the CEO, the board, the staff and lay participants and manifest in a collaborative, organization-wide team approach to development. 
  • Build a diverse development team and maintain a flexible leadership style that empowers staff through active communication and delegation.
  • Work closely with senior program staff to create and develop compelling funding opportunities including those related to the social impact of meaningful service and the causes, like racial equity, education justice and food justice, that call for that impact. 
  • Partner with the Marketing and Communications team to support that evolution of a brand that truly engages the philanthropic community, to ensure consistency of messaging and to recommend and produce reports, newsletters, updates, and other development-facing, strategic communications.
  • Work closely with the Finance and Operations team to ensure sound fiscal operation including alignment of income goals and projections with financial strategies, reporting and planning.
  • Clarify the case for support and train staff, Board and other key lay leaders and partners to present the organization to prospective funders.
  • Serve as lead staff liaison to the Board’s Development Committee, and work closely with Committee Chairs and Board Chair to set and deliver on annual targets.
  • Provide a high level of support to board members and other high-level volunteers and partners on development-related activities in ways that inspire them to action and strengthen their intellectual and emotional commitment.


This position requires a talented, entrepreneurial advancement professional with demonstrated success in building revenue and cultivating effective, long-term philanthropic relationships, as well as experience achieving sizeable aspirations through partnerships with board members, program partners, and colleagues. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are part and parcel to conveying mission, core values and purpose of Repair the World clearly and persuasively. 

  • Demonstrated success in setting and executing a fundraising strategy including creating, stewarding and expanding relationships with diverse funders and building internal enthusiasm and co-ownership of the revenue plans.
  • Deep understanding of the North American Jewish philanthropic landscape, preferably with strong existing relationships with foundation and institutional partners.
  • Successful experience as a partner to a CEO and board and the ability to manage up and across the organization.
  • Strong leadership and supervision skills that include the ability to hire and build a team and to motivate, influence, and hold a team accountable to high standards and goals.
  • Collaborative, team-driven nature with the ability to partner internally with cross-functional teams and externally with Repair the World partners.
  • Exceptional reasoning, problem solving, and analytical skills, including an ability to translate ideas and concepts into clear actionable items and self-awareness and relationship management skills where success includes changing others’ perspectives or practice (change management).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, including among racially, ethnically and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Skilled at multi-tasking; able to organize, prioritize and execute responsibilities in the face of conflicting priorities or unexpected situations; and a high level of discretion.
  • Knowledge of and genuine passion for Repair the World’s mission. 
  • Understanding of the importance and commitment to exploring and implementing continual expansion of equity in the nonprofit working space, including racial equity.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is desirable.
