Position Title: Licensed Professional Counselor

Department: Shelter Programs

Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt; 30 to 40 hours per week Monday-Friday with possible weekends. Shift 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm, as needed.

Reports to: Executive Director

Job Purpose:

The Licensed Professional Counselor performs individual, group, and crisis intervention counseling to victim of domestic violence and their children experiencing social and emotional difficulties. Provides testing as appropriate and makes appropriate referrals for services, supervises, consults with staff, and performs outreach functions. Work is performed under general supervision and performance is based upon completion of assignments and results obtained.

Essential Functions:

  • Knowledge of modern counseling practices and methods, and adherence to existing professional ethical standards.
  • Ability to form and maintain effective counseling relationships with clients, to monitor client progress in the therapy process.
  • Ability to plan, implement, evaluate, and report activities
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate outreach program, support groups and workshops.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and to prepare written documents.
  • Ability to maintain consistent and dependable work schedule adhering to employee work hours.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to meetings.

Specific Duties:

  • Provides services to clients through counseling sessions and support groups.
  • Receives case assignments, establishes treatment plans and reviews case progress. Meets regularly with assigned cases.
  • Provides counseling to children and their mothers and concrete assistance to support increase or restore client’s capacity for self-sufficiency.
  • Establishes and maintains therapeutic and professional relationships with clients to facilitate the receipt of services.
  • Develops service plans, which outline a specific plan of action with each client under the regular supervision of the manager of programs/shelter.
  • Makes referrals in accordance with service plans to other organizations and external providers.
  • Develops, monitors, and enhances professional relationships with social service, health and governmental agencies.
  • Works cooperatively with Case Managers and Victim Advocates to maximize service outcomes.
  • Participates and contributes in regular supervision and team meetings, in house training sessions and conferences.
  • Accurately completes in a timely manner all necessary forms, case recordings and statistical reports.
  • Provides children support groups to clients in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Participates in program and operational planning.
  • Provides intense advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling and problem solving in a variety of areas for victims of domestic violence and their children.
  • Establishes and maintains a professional and therapeutic relationship within the standards of client profiles, confidentiality laws and the newest clinical research available.
  • Assesses, plans, and supplements the client’s level of functioning.
  • Develops, implements, oversees, and follows-up with client treatment plans to ensure that realistic goals and deadlines of accomplishments are being met.
  • Maintains documentation of client’s individual and group treatment.
  • Assumes all clinical responsibility for clients.
  • Presents clinical case reviews.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with outside providers.
  • Coordinates and attends clinical rounds of all outside client resources.
  • Adheres to professional standards as outlined by governmental bodies, American Counseling Association (and/or other appropriate professional associations), and Organization policies/procedures.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Consults with staff concerning client needs.
  • Collects demographic data to maintain statistics on client’s progress.
  • Acts as liaison between client and community resources as needed.
  • Participates in client activities.

Employment Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or a related field of study, Ph.D. in counseling –related field preferred. Must be currently licensed.  
  • Completion of degree and all post-degree supervision for licensure. Prefer at least two years of post-degree experience.
  • Experience in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • Punctual, meticulous and reliable
  • Courteous manners with the public
  • Ability to physically perform the essential job functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
