Job Title: Communications Coordinator

Chapter: Georgia Chapter

Reports to: Deputy Director

Context: Collaborates with chapter volunteer leaders and staff and regional office staff to promote the conservation action, public education, and other goals of the Sierra Club through the development, coordination, and implementation of messages and strategic media plans for the chapter and through outreach to the general public and to public officials.

Scope: The Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating media and marketing strategy for the full range of the chapter conservation action campaigns, public education projects, and other activities.  The Communications Coordinator assists chapter volunteer leaders and chapter and regional office staff in outreach to the general public and to public officials in the shaping and implementation of public policy.

Job Activities:

  1. Develops, implements, and coordinates media strategy for the full range of chapter conservation action campaigns, public education projects and other activities. 
  2. Assists in the development, design and preparation of chapter publications (Quarterly Sierran Newsletter), fact sheets and other communication materials for conservation action campaigns and public education projects. 
  3. Supports fundraising committee branding and marketing strategy to maximize donor engagement, such as Team Sierra, Georgia Giving Society, and regional house party campaign.
  4. Cultivates relations with reporters, editorial boards and seeks their support for Club initiatives and position. Writes and releases statements to the media on all appropriate topics, including opinion pieces for chapter staff and volunteers.  Develops and updates media lists.
  5. Formulates and implements email and inbound marketing strategy to maximize reach to members and supporters on key campaigns such as Beyond Coal, Ready for 100, Transit Expansion, and Wilderness Protection.
  6. Works closely with volunteer leaders and chapter and regional office staff to coordinate media events.
  7. Advises trains and assists regional groups of the chapter in member communications, media relations, marketing support.
  8. Develops social media, and video marketing strategy to enhance the reach to key target groups, strategic partners and allies.
  9. Participates and embodies “movement building” principles, outlined in the 2014 Climate Movement Strategic Plan.
  10. Works with Spanish-language, and other non-english publications to expand coverage of chapter and Sierra Club activities among the Spanish and non-english speaking population.
  11. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned, including support of member engagement events and chapter retreats.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Two to three years experience in communications or closely related field. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent public/media relations skills and ability to communicate well with writers, editors, and publishers.
  • Strong oral, excellent editing and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, and Google Docs, video editing and production software. Understanding of graphic design software, and Canva.com
  • Demonstrated familiarity with conservation and environmental topics, issues, and literature.
  • Proficiency in social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flicker, MeetUp, SnapChat, and knowledge of Drupal website design editing. Salesforce database experience a plus.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Fluency in Spanish (not required, but a plus)
