Position Summary

The Director of Communications is responsible for managing all internal and external communications for Hemophilia of Georgia, ensuring its messages are consistent. The Director of Communications serves as social media manager and is responsible for the social media strategy. This is a full-time, permanent position that reports to the Vice President of Human Resources.

About Our Client

Hemophilia of Georgia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services and support for people who have hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease, and other inherited bleeding disorders. The only agency of its kind in the state, Hemophilia of Georgia works to enhance clients' care and quality of life while actively pursuing a cure through research funding.

HoG is a trusted resource for medical providers and offers rewarding opportunities for volunteers and donors.

HoG's nonprofit pharmacy provides convenient home delivery of clotting factor and other medications at competitive prices.

Hemophilia of Georgia is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors that includes individuals who have bleeding disorders. For more than 40 years, the Hemophilia of Georgia staff has provided a wide range of programs and services including blood clotting products, home infusion training, education, and activities for people who have hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree (journalism, communications, public relations or English is preferred)
  • At least five years’ experience preferably within the healthcare industry, human services or social services
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Willing to execute day-­to­-day tasks and work independently
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Previous experience managing vendor relationships
  • Self-starter who enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to handle a complex and varied workload and reprioritize against internal and external deadlines
  • Ability to present information in a creative, timely and effective way
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications
  • Experience with desktop publishing software is a PLUS

Essential Responsibilities

Communications

  • Promote Hemophilia of Georgia and its products, services, and opportunities. 
  • Work with individual staff members and/or departments to develop social media strategies for their issues, targeting communication content for their audiences, writing web content for their areas of the website, and generally serving the employees as their internal communications resource.
  • Network with media outlets to ensure promotion of HoG’s messages.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of communications materials including brochures, press releases, public service announcements, advertisements, displays, presentations, feature articles, flyers, video scripts, and reports.  Plan, research, write, edit, and oversee printing and distribution.
  • Implement communication strategies by creating the tools required including media releases, article writing, brochures, staff communiqués, print ads, scripts for talking to the media, and promotion of special events.
  • Serve as editor of HoG’s electronic newsletter, Horizons in Hemophilia.  In addition, format and distribute it.
  • Develop written content for a variety of internal and external communication pieces and business development products to effectively communicate HoG’s services.  These may include direct mail, press releases, brochures, social media, and newsletter.
  • Track all communication activities including estimated audience reached and cost.
  • Work with the Director of Health Promotion and Evaluation to develop and write new and relevant content and update existing content for the online Hemophilia, von Willebrand and Platelet Disorders Handbook.
  • Chair HoG’s Communications Committee in order to bring together a multi-disciplinary team focused on communications for the organization.

Social Media

  • Serve as social media manager and administrator.
  • Manage social media strategy and track all social media, fans and followers.
  • Develop a social media plan specifically for engaging clients.
  • Update the social media plan and the goals associated with it. Create social media content by soliciting ideas from staff members.
  • Work with the VP of Public Policy and Advocacy and the Community Engagement Coordinator on a social media strategy to ensure coordination of messages.
  • Plan, proofread, choose photos and graphics, and execute all posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, HoG blog and any other social media channels that HoG chooses to engage in.

Web

  • Serve as webmaster for the HoG and Beacon websites, maintaining the quality and integrity of content and ensuring that the content is relevant, fresh and dynamic.
  • Create targeted messages to varied website audiences.
  • Work closely with all staff members to develop ideas for the website.  Serve as the liaison between employees and the website. Inspire enthusiasm in staff for website updates.
  • Review websites and mail pieces of other bleeding disorder organizations, home care companies, and regional and national organizations to become familiar with information being developed.
  • Track visits to website and other pertinent information.  Continually evaluate website and strive to improve it.
  • Understand copyright laws and other laws affecting web sites.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Stay abreast of trends regarding hemophilia and issues related to the bleeding disorder community.
  • Review all written external communications for the agency.
  • Develop monthly Factor Flyer, Beacon Buzz, Contract Pharmacy Flyer and customer thank you cards for the pharmacies in English and Spanish.
  • Serve on various staff committees and attend agency meetings in order to stay informed about the work of the agency.
  • Write, edit and distribute a weekly staff newsletter.
  • Annually, create and produce an Annual Report and a Camp Calendar.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the VP of Human Resources or the CEO.
