Teaching Trust seeks a Part-time Managing Director of Leadership Development (MDLD) to provide high-quality, intensive leadership coaching, feedback and support to a cohort of educator leaders. This position is ideal for someone who is energized by coaching and developing school leaders and educators, has a passion for achieving ambitious results for kids, and wants to work on a fun, dynamic, goal-driven team. This position reports to the Program Officer, and is available starting Summer 2019.

The Part-time Managing Director of Leadership Development will serve on the Aspiring Leaders Program team. Our Aspiring Leaders Program is offered in partnership with Southern Methodist University's Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, and equips future school leaders to lead effective teams and drive improvement in complex urban schools.

 

What You’ll Take On

At Teaching Trust we believe that strong school leadership is at the core of schools that are changing the odds for our most vulnerable students.  As a Part-time Managing Director of Leadership Development, you will be charged with guiding a portfolio of participants to implement specific practices (related to instruction, team effectiveness and change management) at their schools. You will direct participants to success by delivering large group professional development sessions and providing site-based and other coaching. Your day-to-day work may include:

• Strategic planning with the Program Officer to align priorities against organizational goals.

• Collaborating with participants to establish appropriate student achievement goals in light of school vision and context.

• Assessing participant performance to advance instructional competence, team effectiveness, and student achievement.

• Coaching at individual schools to provide high leverage feedback to individual team members and teams as a whole.

• Planning and facilitating professional development sessions for audiences of 30-150, focused around instructional excellence and team effectiveness.

• Establishing and leveraging relationships with individual program participants to cultivate a sense of community within and across school teams.

• Developing collaborative relationships with Teaching Trust team members to develop best practices around leading school change.

Bring a proven history of results: You have coached teachers and/or school leaders, or led schools that have a record of improving outcomes for kids. You can speak to the the role you played and the strategies and actions employed to achieve these results.

Lead through influence: You know that great leaders can inspire others to act without being in a direct management role. You know how to balance motivation and accountability to lead others to action and can speak about specific examples in your professional history when you have led through influence.  

Deliver exceptional professional development: You have experience designing and leading professional development for large groups of people.  You have the content expertise to create practice-based learning experiences for school leaders that will drive change back on school campuses.

Demonstrate a strong sense of resilience: You approach challenges head on. You know what it means to make tough calls, hold yourself and others accountable to reaching goals, and learn from your mistakes. You expect there to be setbacks and you leverage challenges as an opportunity to improve. You actively seek to get better in all that you do.

You are passionate about delivering programming that amplifies and creates equity and disrupts traditional power structures that may impede educational equity. You are highly motivated by and deeply committed to our organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)  work.

 

Ideal candidates will have:

• Minimum three years as a principal or administrative leadership role; preferably in a high-needs setting

• Ability to speak to consistently improving results for students

•  Experience planning and facilitating practice-based, effective professional development

• Demonstrated ability to identify effective instructional practices and coach others to reach rigorous goals

• Strong content knowledge in personal leadership, instructional leadership, and school culture leadership

• Excellent interpersonal communication and teamwork skills with ability to influence, collaborate and build trusting relationships to drive results

• Ability to tie leadership practices and actions to student achievement data in order to strategically and effectively replicate results

• High level of comfort delivering and receiving direct feedback to influence leaders and improve outcomes

• Ability to work well with people with a very wide diversity of demographic and cultural characteristics; must be capable of achieving results while maintaining an inclusive, collaborative leadership style

• Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion

• Desire and ability to build an aspirational school culture rooted in high-expectations

• Experience with culturally responsive teaching preferred

• Comfort tackling sensitive issues and modeling crucial conversations

• Authorization to work in the United States required
