ORGANIZATION:

Compass Family Services helps homeless families and families at imminent risk for homelessness to achieve housing stability, family well-being, and self-sufficiency. We are the primary access point for services for any SF family facing homelessness and our services include emergency shelter, transitional housing, rental assistance, early childhood education, mental health support, in addition to a broad spectrum of counseling, parenting education, prevention, and support services. Compass was founded in 1914 and has been helping San Franciscans in need for more than a century.  The organization’s annual operating budget is approximately $13 million and a staff of 100+ full-time, part-time and on-call employees. We recently launched a $30 million comprehensive fundraising campaign that will support operations for the next three years, and pay for the purchase and remodel of our new Service Hub for Homeless Families.  We have reached 30% of the campaign goal.                            

We seek to recruit an energetic, creative and passionate individual to lead all aspects of development, marketing and communications at Compass Family Services.  He/she will report to and work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team, and will oversee a team of 4-5.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Development Director works closely with the Executive Director to plan, organize, and implement Compass Family Services' fundraising activities, most notably the organization’s $30 MM three-year Campaign for the San Francisco Family, as well as communications and marketing efforts that support fundraising efforts. Primary activities revolve around leading the staff on the development team in identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors to raise general operating and program support for the agency’s mission and work.

The ideal candidate will comfortably serve as an ambassador to the community, including individual, corporate and foundation donors. They will be an enthusiastic, stimulating lively and persuasive communicator; poised, fluent and articulate, projecting friendliness and warmth. They will be an effective motivator and delegator who possesses strong interpersonal skills and be a flexible, determined, and fast learner.

The Development Director is part of the senior staff leadership team, and also regularly interfaces with the board of directors, helping board members integrate into the development effort. The Development Director supervises the following positions: Corporate Relations & Communications Manager; Events & Development Systems Manager; Grants Manager; part-time Volunteer Coordinator; and Campaign Manager.

Areas of Responsibilities: 

Organizational Leadership

  • Demonstrate and communicate a passion for the mission of Compass Family Services.
  • Work in partnership with senior leadership team and Board members to develop the strategic direction of Compass Family Services and make ongoing strategic decisions to ensure the success and future growth of the organization.
  • Participate on the senior leadership team providing leadership and direction for Compass Family Services’ policies, programs and operations.
  • Strategically lead and organize Compass Family Services’ Development and  Communications department.
  • Develop and oversee Compass Family Services’ IMPACT Leadership Council.
  • Represent Compass Family Services to the external community.
  • Provide fundraising analysis to the senior leadership team and the Board. 

Fundraising

  • Serve as an active ambassador to individual, foundation and corporate donors and prospects. Meeting with donors and perspective donors as part of the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship process is a key part of the job. 
  • Support and coach other ambassadors (staff, Board members and volunteers) to prepare them for donor visits, help develop strategy for donor meetings, and ensure proper follow-up.
  • Strategically develop and lead a broad-spectrum Development function with a diversified strategy to sustain and grow the revenue base of Compass Family Services to meet its annual operating budget as well as underpin future growth.
  • Identify and cultivate new corporate, foundation and individual donor support.
  • Ensure that all Development efforts are well organized, well executed and lay the foundation for future increases in donor support.
  • Ensure excellent donor and funder stewardship via individualized and effective means.
  • Position Compass Family Services with corporate and cause marketing activities.
  • Keep up with trends in philanthropy to keep Compass Family Services on the forward edge of acquiring donor support in the future.

Communications

  • Manage the Development team’s efforts to articulate and persuasively disseminate Compass Family Services’ mission in written and verbal communications.
  • Work with Corporate Relations & Communications Manager to craft donor correspondence and materials, messaging, and annual communications plan.
  • Present to a variety of audiences to elicit support, create partnerships, and promote Compass Family Services’ brand awareness. 
  • Help envision, shape and implement an overall marketing plan for the organization and help formulate marketing campaigns that have impact on fundraising and policy issues.

Partner with Executive Director and Board members

  • Partner with, guide, counsel, and engage the Executive Director in development activities as appropriate.
  • Partner with Board members and Compass Family Services staff in development activities, as appropriate.
  • Staff and provide leadership to the Board of Director’s Development Committee. 

Functional Operations Support

  • Ensure that donor management systems are implemented and fully utilized and that donor cultivation strategies are fully supported through appropriate technology.
  • Manage the Events & Development Systems Manager to assure the strong management of the donor database, integrity and accuracy of the information, and the prompt, accurate acknowledgement and recognition of donor contributions.
  • Create the strategy and provide the appropriate oversight to continuously improve and effectively support all Development and Communications initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the annual development budget and work plan; track and report results to the Executive Director and Board. 

Staff Management

  • Lead and mentor the team of Development and Communications staff.
  • Model a leadership style that is transparent, supportive, and encouraging to staff, treating team members as respected colleagues.
  • Set strong vision for Development and Communications team, including clear objectives, goals and timelines. Celebrate milestones achieved.
  • Provide professional development support for the Development and Communications team.
  • Maintain a strong team spirit and healthy working environment within the department to ensure staff retention.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Director of Development, Marketing & Communications will be a dynamic and experience leader with a minimum of 8 years of fundraising experience, with progress experience in multi-channel development work and communications. 

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • A proven track record of building and leading a Development and Communications department.
  • Experience as a senior leader with the demonstrated ability to manage and develop high-performing teams to implement program strategies and achieve organizational goals.
  • Experience in organizational management, preferably in the nonprofit sector working with homeless families, youth and social services programs preferred.
  • Experience envisioning, and implementing marketing campaigns which will impact fundraising and policy issues. 
  • Knowledge of the community history and its challenges, and demonstrated cultural competency in working with this community.
  • Significant fundraising experience in a senior leadership position with a proven track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Ability to take strategic approach and tactical processes to fundraising, with a track record of successful fundraising outcomes for small to medium sized nonprofit organizations.
  • Experience building and managing a Development, Marketing and Communications team and developing and managing systems that support the development function.
  • Existing relationships with and knowledge of key stakeholders in the philanthropic, political, nonprofit, and community realm in San Francisco.
  • A track record as an effective communicator who can articulate Compass Family Services’ mission and make a compelling, inspirational case for support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and high attention to detail required.
  • Heavy special event fundraising experience is highly preferred.
