Job Responsibilities 

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to develop and advance JBAY’s policy agenda.
  • Implement identified strategies, working in tandem with other team members, external consultants and organizational allies. 
  • Conduct research to inform and develop well-substantiated policy proposals.
  • Develop strong, collaborative relationships with state agencies, partner organizations, coalitions, legislators and staff, and other stakeholders to advance shared goals. 
  • Develop strategies to educate and engage stakeholders on JBAY’s policy agenda.
  • Write extensively, including issue briefs, newsletter articles, fact sheets, press releases, and opinion pieces among others.
  • Recruit youth and adult supporters to testify at public hearings.
  • Testify at public hearings and prepare young adults and other stakeholders to provide public testimony.
  • Conduct grassroots organizing.
  • Schedule and conduct visits with members of the State Legislature and their staff.
  • Analyze and summarize legislation and the state budget.
  • Collaborate with JBAY staff members who conduct technical assistance to identify systemic solutions to the issues that arise in their work.
  • Provide technical assistance to local government agencies on the implementation of adopted policies.
  • Make public presentations on topics related to child welfare, juvenile probation and homelessness.
  • Integrate policy activities with media, research, community-based and fundraising activities.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences and seminars on behalf of the organization.
  • Support the development of grant proposals and prepare periodic grant reports.
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and other JBAY team meetings as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience

  • The successful candidate should either have a bachelor’s degree and at least seven years’ experience in politics or government; or a post-bachelors graduate education and at least five years of relevant experience.
  • JD or master’s degree preferred.

Skills and Competencies

The candidate will also be able to demonstrate the following skills and competencies:

  • Excellent verbal, writing and editing skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Deep knowledge in the fields of child welfare, juvenile probation and/or youth homelessness.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining positive and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision, but also have the ability to know when to seek help or support from supervisor or colleagues.
  • Excellent collaborative problem-solving with a high level of maturity and judgment.
  • Technology savvy.
  • Detail oriented.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt and at-will position. JBAY provides full benefits including health/dental, paid leave time and 401(k) plan. Salary is commensurate with experience.
