Job Title: Church Accountant/Bookkeeper

Reports to: Parish Administrator and Treasurer

Position Status:  P/T – 20 hours per week

Purpose: To provide Financial services to the church

Position overview:  This part-time position of 20 hours per week, not to exceed 1000 hours per year,  ensures that church financial records are updated, timely, and accurately.  Financial records include donor records, cash disbursements, accounts payable, payroll, financial reports on activities, budgets, donor restricted contributions and disbursements.  The Accountant/Bookkeeper works directly with church staff to communicate status of budgeted expenditures, budget requests, and expenditure approvals according to church policy.  The Bookkeeper/Accountant works with confidential information and must respect privacy and confidences of church staff, church members, and others working with a need to know about the financial information.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of Monthly Financial Statement by the 10th of every month
  • Meet with Treasurer to discuss financials
  • Meet monthly with Finance Committee members
  • Record all transactions (deposits, disbursements, and payroll) into ACS software
  • Record and track parishioners’ pledges, payments, and contributions
  • Monthly bank reconciliations
  • Monthly accounting and reconciliation of designated funds
  • Prepare reports for staff as needed
  • Process payroll tax returns on a quarterly and annual basis (including but not limited to 941, GA, W-2, 1099’s)
  • Prepare the annual Parochial Report
  • Assist with annual financial statement audit
  • Assist with annual budget process
  • Process monthly and bi-monthly payroll
  • Other duties as required

Requirements and Competencies:

  • Minimum of an Associate’s degree in accounting
  • Practical experience in church accounting and payroll, including pension contributions
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Access, Powerpoint, and ACS accounting systems (training provided if needed)
  • Attention to detail and precision in accounting reconciliation and report generation
  • A commitment to confidentiality

Positions Type and Expected Hours Work:

This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, not to exceed 1000 hours per year. The schedule is to be determined with the Parish Administrator in consultation with the Vicar or Rector and will be within normal working hours of Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-5:00pm, Friday 9:00am-4:00pm (3pm on Fridays during summer hours).  Evening hours may be required occasionally for committee meetings.
