Program Coordinator - Consumer Justice Clinic

The Consumer Justice Clinic (CJC) of the East Bay Community Law Center is seeking a full-time Program Coordinator to provide initial screening for clients with consumer-related problems, to direct clients to appropriate internal and external services, and to provide general administrative support to CJC staff attorneys. Ideal candidates enjoy working with a diverse range of people in a fast-paced and dynamic working environment and bring strong organizational skills to CJC’s activities and staff. EBCLC is a non-profit legal services organization and the community-based clinical program for Berkeley Law School, committed to increasing justice through education and advocacy and building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on equity. With over 70 staff, 150 law students, and an $8 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal advocacy in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 5,000 clients yearly and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the local and state level.
The Consumer Justice Clinic exists to support and empower our clients to challenge financial systems designed to both perpetuate multi-generational racial exclusion from credit, property, and wealth-building tools, and to strip marginalized communities of the assets they have fought to acquire. Issues addressed by CJC include debt collection, credit reporting and access to credit, student loans, car fraud, predatory lending, and consumer scams, particularly those aimed at seniors and immigrant communities. CJC also runs a General Clinic, which provides legal information, education, and advocacy on a wide range of civil legal issues to individuals who cannot find legal assistance elsewhere.
- Support a holistic-oriented legal team that provides direct representation, screening, brief services, informational workshops, and outreach to the low-income community in the East Bay
- Screen a high-volume of individuals by phone and in person for eligibility for services, to assess legal issues, and to provide or coordinate appropriate assistance
- Maintain client appointment calendar and communicate calendar information to staff attorneys, law students, and support staff as needed
- Enter client and case data into EBCLC’s database to ensure accurate accounting of information and services disseminated as required for grant or project reporting
- Provide translation assistance, drafting correspondence in both English and Spanish, and interpret for client meetings and interviews as needed
- Meet with clients and prepare paperwork under the supervision of attorneys
- Provide administrative support to staff attorneys
- Additional tasks as assigned by Supervisor
- Two (2) years experience in an administrative, social or legal services environment; BA degree may substitute for experience requirement
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Drop Box. Ability to pick up new computer skills quickly.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, homeless people, immigrants, non-English speakers, people with mental disabilities, people experiencing domestic violence, law students, service providers, government employees, community partners, elected officials, and law school faculty
- Ability to work with people in crisis, including people with mental disabilities, in an empathetic and professional manner; demonstrated de-escalation skills or willingness to learn
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills; ability to be detail-oriented, multi-task, set priorities, and work independently, but in close coordination with other staff
- High degree of flexibility; strong sense of humor; ability to work well with incredibly busy team
- Strong commitment to social justice
- Excellent listening skills and comprehension required
- Comfortable talking to a high volume of callers
- Fluency in Spanish with demonstrated ability to interpret accurately between English and Spanish
Salary and Benefits:
Starting hourly rate for this full-time non-exempt position is $23.63 - $34.62 based on number of years of prior relevant experience, as dictated by EBCLC’s salary scale.
