ABOUT TROUT UNLIMITED

Trout Unlimited is a national organization with 300,000 members and supporters organized into over 400 chapters and councils nationwide.  These dedicated grassroots volunteers are matched by a respected staff of organizers, lawyers, policy experts, and scientists, who work out of more than 45 offices across the country.  Our mission is to conserve, protect, and restore North America's cold-water fisheries and their watersheds.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Stream Restoration Specialist will report directly to the Restoration Manager for Connecticut and New York and will be responsible for survey and design of aquatic organism passage, large wood habitat enhancement, and bank stabilization projects.  Some projects may also require permitting and construction oversight responsibilities. Aquatic organism passage projects at road-stream crossings will follow the U.S. Forest Service stream simulation approach for developing a design to provide multiple benefits including flood resiliency, improved aquatic habitat and water quality, and protection of aquatic health and biodiversity. The position location is ideally located in New York but can be flexible because some projects may also be in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct stream geomorphic surveys (dimension, pattern, profile, substrate), and stream habitat assessments, as well as aquatic passage assessments.
  • Perform channel and topographic surveys using standard survey equipment to develop basemaps for existing conditions.
  • Develop basemaps and design plans in AutoCAD.
  • Develop hydrologic and hydraulic models for basis of design.
  • Prepare design plans, cost estimates, and specifications for aquatic habitat restoration projects.
  • Assist with permitting and collection of pre-and post-construction data for monitoring of projects.
  • Survey and design multiple restoration projects simultaneously.
  • Provide construction oversight for project implementation.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A P.E. or M.S. in geomorphology or biological systems engineering is preferred. A B.S. in watershed management, geomorphology, or biological systems engineering with applied experience is required.
  • Expertise in natural stream design techniques and demonstrated ability to design and oversee the installation of comprehensive habitat improvement projects.
  • Experience with developing and applying hydrologic and hydraulic computer models.
  • Experience with project design development, project permitting, and supervision of multiphase stream restoration projects.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including federal and state agencies, farmers, biologists, engineers, and other landowners.
  • Experience in construction document development using computer aided design software such as AutoCAD Civil3D.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software is preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.  Valid driver’s license required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills. A working knowledge of principles and practices of fisheries and aquatic resource management with a particular emphasis on stream habitat requirements of brook trout.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and highly energetic, with excellent time-management skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Passion for trout and salmon and the places they live.
