DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS  

SUMMARY:

We are looking for a Director of Development and Communications. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities.

As the Director of Development, you will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Exempt

SPECIFIC DUTIES: The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build CIS of Atlanta’s visibility, impact, and financial resources to include but not limited to the following:

  • Develop annual and long-term fundraising plans based on targets established in the organization’s strategic plan;
  • Progressive development experience, preferably in a non-profit organizational setting.
  • Proven success in securing large contributions from government grants, family foundations, corporate foundations and individual donors;
  • High comfort level interacting with senior level executives and people of wealth;
  • Ability to manage and grow an active portfolio of prospects; fearless but smart in the ability to ask for gifts and to position others to ask for gifts;
  • Experience with major gifts, annual fund campaigns, events and planned giving techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the development process and understanding of all stages of the relationship with individual donors (identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship). Desire to be a strong team player;
  • A track record of successful engagement with funders and foundations as demonstrated through executed partnerships and grants, ranging from structuring partnerships and planning grants through activation of highly impactful programs;
  • A high degree of personal initiative with the desire and ability to meet aggressive revenue goals;
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a flexible, entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and opportunistic environment;
  • Highly collaborative style; positive attitude; commitment to continuous improvement and strong work ethic grounded in honesty and integrity;
  • Creating and executing a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors and cultivating new individual donors;
  • The Director of Development will develop a comprehensive fundraising plan with annual and long-term goals to ensure the initiative's future success. S/he will cultivate new prospects, participate in strategy sessions, make proposals, and make solicitations;
  • Develop and sustain relationships with existing foundation, corporate, individual and government donors to maintain and increase their support for CIS programs;
  • Identify, secure and communicate with new donors, sponsors, and service partners;
  • Develop and execute a strategic marketing plan, with a view toward increasing our exposure and expanding our relationships with corporations;
  • Develop and manage a strategic external and internal communications program, and annual implementation plans for communications with measurable goals;
  • Compile and submit grant proposals and reports;
  • Provide staff support for the board of directors’ Resource Development Committee;
  • Manage special sponsorship events designed primarily to raise funds for or increase awareness of CIS;
  • Manage the donor database to develop profiles, track contacts and correspondence, and record contributions received;
  • Ensure that data is accurately collected and reported to assess the volume and value of all donated services, volunteer hours and other in-kind resources;
  • Manage all employees, interns or volunteers assigned to the Development department. Supervise the work of any development consultants, including our current grant writing and event consultants.Work to include and integrate designated program staff on community relations, marketing, grants management, stewardship and donor cultivation;
  • Oversee planning, successful execution and follow up of CISA’s annual gala, “Choose Success,” and work to gradually increase the size of and revenue generated by the event;
  • Represent CIS of Atlanta at agency and community meetings as requested;
  • Attend Executive Team meetings and take an active role in development of organizational strategies;
  • Carry out other duties as determined by the CEO for the successful operation of the program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree (Masters Degree preferred) in public relations, marketing, communications, nonprofit management or a related field;
  • CFRE certification preferred.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of proven success in development, marketing and media/community relations with significant experience managing major gifts relationships, including a proven track record of soliciting and closing large individual gifts.;
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, stewardship and marketing targeted individuals, foundations and corporations and thorough knowledge of development best practices.
  • Ability to provide leadership, think strategically and participate in high-level development discussions;
  • Knowledge of foundation, corporate and government grant processes and grant writing;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and written skills;
  • Experience with event planning;
  • Detail-oriented and able to analyze data and make projections;
  • Able to work independently, meet multiple deadlines, be resourceful and function as an effective team member;
  • Demonstrates strong commitment to CIS mission
  • Prefer candidates with individual, corporate and foundation contacts;
  •  
  • Able to pass a criminal background check.
