NAPW seeks an experienced Organizer to help develop and implement grasstops and grassroots strategies to support the organization’s initiatives.
The ideal candidate possesses strong speaking, writing, and influencing skills combined with a well-developed command of outreach, relationship, and movement-building best practices. It is essential that h/she has a personal and professional commitment to social and economic justice, a strong work ethic, comfort pushing forward in uncertain situations, and strongly supports NAPW’s advocacy.
During the first year, organizing efforts will be focused primarily on two New York-focused community organizing and direct action projects: 1) The design and implementation of a plan to demonstrate strong public opposition /objection awareness to a New York hospital’s policy permitting doctors to carry out forced (unconsented to) medical interventions on pregnant and laboring people; 2) To demonstrate support for the parents and families typically targeted for investigation and family separation by the NYC Administration for Children Services. In addition, the organizer may play a role in coordinating rapid response direct actions, as appropriate, in response to the news cycle and new or ongoing NAPW cases. After the first year the organizer may work on cases across the country; willingness to travel will be required to do this effectively.
The Organizer will be primarily responsible for leading and sustaining NAPW’s organizing, and community outreach efforts. S/He will also work closely with the organization’s Media and Communications Manager, external coalition partners, activists, clients, external counsel, experts, and advocates to effectively communicate NAPW’s positions and create content for broader education and outreach. S/he will be responsible for building a community of volunteers they will work with on an ongoing basis to achieve impactful direct actions that support NAPW's goals.
The Organizer position reports to the Director of Legal Advocacy and the Deputy Director for Operations. They will also receive some direction and mentoring from the Executive Director as well as the staff attorney who is acting as lead on the relevant case or issue.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Work collaboratively with grassroots leaders, allies, and NAPW staff to execute effective direct actions that serve to educate the public and activists about NAPW issues and cases;
• Recruit and engage volunteers and train them to participate in direct actions with NAPW and/or conduct similar types of events in their communities; and manage follow-up with volunteers;
• Draft compelling, easily understandable fliers, event invitations, tweets, and other materials necessary to educate and engage activists and allies about our positions;
• Track activities and prepare reports on engagement and outcomes;
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of NAPW’s activist database; and consider and help develop methods to communicate with activists about direct actions and ways to be engaged;
• Contribute to NAPW reports, publications, and proposals, as appropriate;
• Participate in organizing the planning and implementation of conferences, meetings, and educational events relevant to NAPW issues and interests;
• Develop knowledge of cases in NYC and other parts of the US where women have had forced cesareans, been prosecuted in relationship to their pregnancies including for having or attempting to have an abortion, experiencing a stillbirth or miscarriage, or continuing to term in a manner believed to create a risk of harm;
• Develop and deepen strategic partnerships with doulas, midwives, birth rights/justice and child welfare advocates and organizations working in diverse communities across the state and nation, and help build and participate in coalitions by fostering, strengthening, and nurturing alliances;
• Conduct research to understand the communities in which actions will take place, identify new partners and suggest current allies to engage;
• Suggest the best approach for actions based on the case/issue including meeting with elected officials, phone-banking and/or canvassing, etc;
• Collaborate with the Media and Communications Manager to effectively interact with the media, and use social media and technology for organizing;
• Communicate and work effectively with external audiences such as the news media, government officials, and coalition partners;
• Function as an effective spokesperson for clients and for NAPW, including in public presentations.
The ideal candidate will possess the following minimum qualifications:
• Three to five years of community organizing experience;
• Bachelor’s degree preferred. We will, however, consider non-degreed candidates with exceptional organizing experience;
• A successful record of developing targeted organizing campaigns to obtain successful outcomes, draw attention to injustice, and build public support for an issue;
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, drug policy, strong analysis of systemic oppression based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, and an understanding of challenges facing communities of color and low-and moderate-income families, and the ability to connect litigation and legal advocacy with local and national organizing and education efforts;
• Experience working with advocacy technology tools, including social media, text messaging, e-mail, and phone calls to increase engagement, and comfort and willingness to learn new tools;
• Strong time management skills, with an ability to work effectively under pressure and to prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities, and follow through with a minimum of direct supervision;
• Willingness and ability to work irregular hours when needed, including nights and weekends, and to travel as necessary;
• Demonstrable focus, resilience, and the problem-solving skill to develop solutions under challenging circumstances;
Strong communications experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders through strategic messaging. A background in or experience with utilizing social media is highly desired;
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at once in a self-directed manner, ability to work collaboratively as part of a fast-moving and results-oriented team, ability to work in coordination with a diverse group of coalition partners and ability to work effectively in a changing environment;
• Experience working with a virtual team as the local/regional representative for national organization; • Bilingual, Spanish-English, a plus;
• Advanced-level proficiency and solid, measurable experience in a variety of Mac OS platform computer software applications, databases, and social media platforms (e.g. MS Office Suite, Zoom, Google Hangout, Skype, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Canva; LinkedIn); Familiarity with (or trainability on) Podio, 4-D, and other software relevant to specific area of expertise and internal office communications. Familiarity with Google Organization & Productivity Tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar).
