Under the direction of the Director of Development, the Grant Writer will provide leadership, project management, technical assistance and coordination in collaboration with program staff to develop successful, high-quality grant proposals and grant reports. The Grant Writer will be responsible for researching, planning, and writing private foundation and corporate grant requests and reports, with opportunities to pursue government grants.

The Grant Writer is passionate about the mission of the Y and its programs, and can effectively communicate the pivotal role the Y plays in meeting community needs. The ideal candidate is an exceptional storyteller with a keen editorial eye for detail; is self-directed and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines; and thrives in a fast-paced environment.


Minimum Requirements

* Excellent writing skills, with ability to develop compelling LOIs, proposals, reports, acknowledgement letters, and other development communications that effectively capture the Y voice

* Demonstrated ability to create compelling collateral that effectively communicates proposal requests for use in site visits and funder meetings

* Demonstrated track record of securing grants from a variety of sources

* Ability to digest and comply with grant proposal requirements

* Ability to coordinate collection of relevant information from multiple departments, including for budget development purposes

* Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute multiple tasks on an ongoing basis according to a demanding, fast-paced, deadline-driven production schedule

* Attention to detail, with strong proofreading and editing skills

* Ability to establish, maintain and grow an excellent rapport with Y executives and program staff to maximize collaboration to meet fundraising goals

* Ability to work collaboratively with multiple internal and external stakeholders

* Ability to effectively use fundraising and grants management software

* Bachelor’s degree

* A minimum of three years of experience in grant writing

* If internal to the Y, must have a minimum YMCA Team Leader certification


Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in health and human services or youth development grant writing

* Experience submitting United Way grants

* Experience identifying and preparing local and federal government grants



* Proactively research, identify, and submit foundation, corporate and United Way grants, ensuring all deadlines are met and content meets all proposal requirements

* Acquire and maintain detailed knowledge and understanding of the organization, its mission, and its programs to develop persuasive grant proposals, reports, presentations, and other development materials

* Provide grant writing support to Y branches and review grant proposals created by other departments for content, accuracy and timeliness

* Develop budgets in collaboration with program and accounting staff

* Maintain language bank and common attachments needed for proposals

* Draft thank you letters, interim reports, and final reports

* With the Director of Development, develop and maintain an annual grant calendar of upcoming application and reporting deadlines

* Support development team and other Y staff with writing and editing as needed

* Serve as backup support for grants management staff

* Provide support for other projects as identified by Director of Development
