Second Helpings Atlanta is a non-profit food rescue organization whose mission is to reduce hunger and food waste in the metro Atlanta area. The Volunteer Coordinator's responsibilities are twofold:

  • The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for identifying and recruiting volunteers, completing the welcome process, managing the list of volunteers awaiting assignment to a route; matching volunteers from that list to new and open routes as they arise and managing volunteer relationships on an ongoing basis. 
  • The Volunteer Coordinator supports route-related volunteer scheduling, including route changes and substitutions, communicating with volunteers about route assignments and other matters.  Responsibilities include:
    • Posts and advertises for volunteers through recruiting websites and other media
    • Concentrates on volunteer recruitment in geographically targeted growth areas, and clustering around newly identified Food Donors
    • Recruits and qualifies new volunteers
    • Inputs and manages volunteer contact and profile information in Salesforce in a timely and ongoing basis
    • Manages initial communications and discloses compliance requirements with all potential and new volunteers
    • Develops and maintains updated volunteer training materials, conducts volunteer orientation training, and ensures all drivers are properly trained
    • Manages list of volunteers awaiting assignment, and assigns to new and open routes in a manner that optimizes efficiency, and where applicable conforms to SHA's 90 Minute Model
    • Recruit volunteers to staff special events
    • Manages changes to volunteers’ assigned routes, assigns volunteers for substitute routes and inbound food pick-up requests, and communicates available substitution routes and new route to volunteers;
    • Creates and coordinates special holiday routes and re-routes, ensures volunteers are scheduled to handle non-standard holiday routes;
    • Support volunteer relationships with SHA and communications on an ongoing basis
    • Manages and resolves Volunteer-related issues
    • Manage general volunteer communications, including general updates and best practices
    • Participates in volunteer recognition programs and special events
    • Participates with Operations Manager and Executive Director in ensuring volunteers are engaged in projects suited to their skills and desire to serve SHA
    • Attends the Operations Team calls and meetings as required, including regularly scheduled staff meetings
    • Provides input regarding proposed new Food Donors and Partner Agencies to the Operations Team
    • Identifies requirements for enhanced functionality of Salesforce, including the design and testing of Salesforce  

Qualifications and competencies

In addition to an understanding of, and commitment to, the mission of SHA, this position requires:

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to interact with and advise volunteers

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Docs with the ability to be trained in Salesforce (Volunteer, Agency and Donor management system)

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with ability to pay attention to detail

  • Self-motivated to “follow through” on assigned and self-directed tasks

  • Positive attitude,  poised public presence, and ability to listen

  • Good reasoning abilities and sound judgment

  • Self-directed and ability to work both autonomously and with various teams and people

  • Flexible hours with ability to work nights and weekends

  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities tactfully, maturely, and with flexibility
  • The position requires 20 hours per week, with some tasks being performed nights and weekends.  The Volunteer Coordinator position pays $16 per hour and will report directly to the Operations Manager.
