Vice President of Development

The Vice President of Development reports to Charlene Crusoe-Ingram, CEO and serves as a key member of the CEO’s senior management team. This position requires a comprehensive understanding and background to develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, and successfully solicit individuals, corporations, foundations, and government for a fundraising budget of $5M annually. The Vice President of Development will have experience closing six to seven figure major gifts, and leading a department that possesses active major gift fundraising principles and practices, high level of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, and a strong belief in the mission and principles and practices of MOWA. The Vice President of Development will possess the ability to work collaboratively with the development team and all of the other departments of MOWA, including Board of Trustees and volunteers.
The Vice President of Development will set the strategic fundraising direction that will support MOWA’s objectives and growth. Included in these responsibilities are overseeing and implementing agreed upon fundraising strategies that will grow the donor base – with a particular focus on individual and major donors in the Greater Atlanta area and throughout the Georgia market through the building of relationships with community influencers, philanthropists, corporations, foundations and government agencies.
The Vice President of Development will:
- Collaborate with the Board of Trustees and CEO to create a fund development plan that increases revenue to support the strategic direction of the organization
- Implement the fund development programs in accordance with the ethical fundraising principles
- Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities including special events to ensure that the fundraising goals are achieved
- Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans, and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the development department
- Update Public calendar with appointments of self and team
- Update team MOWA at regular staff meetings
- Oversee the administration of the donor mailing list and database that respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information
- Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization
- Serve as MOWA’s primary point of contact for development-related inquiries and requests from both external and internal constituents
- Manage a portfolio of donors and prospects, including but not limited to individuals and corporate relationships
- Develop and maintain a strong partnership with the Atlanta business community
- Be present at monthly non-profit meetings
- Serve as the liaison between community organizations (economic development, civic organizations and other non-profits)
- Schedule and host corporate visits
- Develop comprehensive communications plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization
- Lead external communications including social media, public relations, marketing initiatives and stewardship programs including publication creation
- Coordinate the design, printing, and distribution of marketing and communications materials for development efforts
- Develop philanthropic proposals; oversee the preparation and submission of grant applications to generate funds for the organization
- Lead and manage strategy for volunteer services and staff
- Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred
- 7 to 10 years minimum experience in professional fundraising
- A minimum of five years of successful major gift fundraising
- Experience in business development is a plus
- Strong organizational, verbal and written skills
- Knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising
- Desire to get out of the office and build external relationship
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people
- Ability to act effectively both independently and as a member of a team
- Flexibility to meet changing priorities
- Fluency with computer software (The Raiser’s Edge, all Microsoft programs, Blackbaud)
- Proven success in the solicitation of five- and six-figure gifts
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to work autonomously and multitask in a changing environment while keeping the CEO appropriately apprised of issues, problems, opportunities and progress
- Ability to collaborate and coordinate work across different departments of the organization while maintaining each department’s priorities in mind
- A positive attitude, creativity, and flexibility; ability to tolerate ambiguity and change
- Expertise in working with boards, committees, leadership and community volunteers
