In addition to a highly talented cadre of environmental lawyers, legislative advocates, development, and other staff, Earthjustice has an amazing communications department that works in strategic partnership with every other department at the organization. The department has three teams: Advocacy Communications, Creative, and Online. The Advocacy Communications team oversees all strategic communications efforts related to the three major programs at Earthjustice – Climate and Energy, Healthy Communities, and Lands and Wildlife. The Advocacy Communications team is composed of communications experts with experience in media outreach, storytelling, and campaigning across multiple platforms and channels, with staff located at Earthjustice’s headquarters in San Francisco and on the East Coast. The Advocacy Communications team works closely in collaboration with the other teams in the Communications department and with Earthjustice’s attorneys to elevate the visibility of the environmental challenges at the heart of Earthjustice’s cases and to engage key audiences in fighting these challenges.
This position is for DC Advocacy Communications Manager located in Washington, DC. Until now, the Advocacy Communications Manager position has operated as the lead communications strategist for one of the three major programs at Earthjustice: Climate and Energy, Healthy Communities, and Lands, Oceans, and Wildlife. This Advocacy Communications Manager position is focused less on topic and more on place and policy. We are looking for a full-time communications professional who can work out of Earthjustice’s DC office and be the primary communications partner for our Policy and Legislation team (which we refer to as “PAL”). The other Advocacy Communications Managers report directly to the Senior Director, Advocacy Communications and work closely with one of the three Vice Presidents of Litigation. This position would also report to the Senior Director for Advocacy Communications, and work most closely with the Vice President of Policy and Legislation.
The DC Advocacy Communications Manager would stay abreast of any and all developments in the DC policy world related to Earthjustice’s work and litigation. S/he can determine opportunities for Earthjustice to respond to, act on, or comment on a particular development in the DC space. S/he has deep understanding of how Congress operates and how to influence DC policy leaders through media, social media, and outreach. S/he will be the primary communications liaison for Earthjustice in a limited number of the coalitions and groups we actively participate in (like the Green Group) and would consult with relevant stakeholders to determine when Earthjustice is communicating as part of a coalition effort or amplifying our own messaging and outreach. Once those decisions have been called, s/he can quickly and decisively act to pitch reporters, issue press statements, social media posts, and emails by working in coordination with other teams within the Earthjustice communications team.
- Works with Vice President of Policy and Legislation and full Policy and Legislation team to stay on top of latest news and developments in DC policy sphere. Embedded with PAL team as communications lead for that team, while still remaining a member of the Earthjustice communications department.
- Staffs Earthjustice presence on communications matters within a limited number of priority groups and coalitions working to marshal rapid-response protocols and defense against the incoming Administration and Congress.
- Close coordination with other teams within the Earthjustice communications department, such as the earned media team, the email and social media teams, and editorial.
- Can quickly draft press statements, blog posts, tweets, etc and quickly adapt rapid-fire communications tactics to organization’s ongoing brand and profile in the DC political space.
- Looks for opportunities to play offense or defense on issues critical to Earthjustice’s work and ongoing litigation efforts.
- Can maintain and cultivate relationships with reporters and media outlets most influential in DC space.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public policy, communications, or environmental fields highly desirable but not necessary.
- 5 - 7 years in DC-based policy and communications work, with experience doing Hill outreach and DC-based communications work. Media experience with DC audiences desirable.
- Familiarity with how the legislative process works at the federal level.
- Deep understanding of DC policy space and the interactions therein, especially with respect to the Administration, Congress, and the NGO community.
- Understands which national and DC-focused media outlets are most important for Earthjustice to reach out to.
- Quick judgment and acute sense of what messaging works with respect with DC audiences-e.g., whether we are pursuing “inside-Beltway” strategies versus “outside-in” pressure from constituents on particular topics of interest.
- Ability to decode how complex and often obscure laws, policies, and rules affect Earthjustice’s work on particular issue areas.
- Experience and judgment in determining when to pay attention to legislative opportunities and threats even when the media’s attention is engaged elsewhere.
- Thinks of and develops creative new ways to mobilize supporters for strategic impact.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated experience to create compelling messages and stories out of content that seems highly technical and wonky.
- Outstanding organizational skills with demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate a variety of detailed outreach projects, sometimes under a very tight deadline.
- Ability to work with staff in a team environment and exhibit strong team building/participation skills.
- Experience working on environmental or social justice issues such as toxic air and water pollution, environmental justice, clean energy, coal, global warming, or public lands a plus.
- Experience working in coordination with other nonprofit groups also a plus.
- Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
- Contributes to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
