Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta saves lives by meeting the most critical needs in the Metro Atlanta area by addressing health disparities that limit access to care, and by investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.  Within Komen Atlanta’s 13-county service area, breast cancer late-stage diagnosis rates are 6% higher and breast cancer-related death rates are 8% higher when compared to the rest of the U.S. population. For African American women within metro Atlanta, these statistics are far worse: breast cancer late-stage diagnosis rates are 30% higher and breast cancer-related death rates are 45% higher when compared to their Caucasian counterparts. While breast cancer knows no boundaries, be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location, the health outcomes for those diagnosed with breast cancer differ greatly for women with limited financial resources. Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta works to address this health equity gap by providing access to quality care and by supporting global research efforts.
