If you’re a jobseeker, job alerts (also referred to as listing alerts) are one of the handiest features offered on Work for Good: With a (very) little finessing, you can have an automated job search assistant delivering the best new opportunities directly to your inbox.
For anyone new to the feature, or having trouble with the alerts you’ve already established, here’s a guide for setting them up effectively.
But first: What are job alerts?
Job alerts are automatically-generated notification emails, updating you on all the new Work for Good job opportunities that match your parameters. They can be set to arrive daily or weekly, and they can be tested or tweaked at any time.
How to create an alert
You can create a job alert in three simple steps.
- Click Find a job, Create job alerts, or Browse the Job Board to bring up the job search page.
- Apply filters to narrow results depending on what you’re looking for – by location, employment type, role category, remote options, mission focus area, etc.
- You can apply as many filters as you like, but using too many may limit your results.
- Be sure to apply filters before clicking “Create Alert,” otherwise you’ll receive notifications for all new listings!
- Note the box labeled Create Listing Alert. Type a name into the text box, select your notification frequency, and click Create Alert.
- If you are not logged in, you’ll be prompted to login or create an account before proceeding.
After you create your alert, you’ll receive an email confirmation.
Keep in mind:
- Your alert emails will only be sent if new listings are found that match your filters.
- If there are new listings, you’ll receive an email with a summary of the new listings and a link to view them.
- You’ll receive a separate email for each alert you save – which may contain repeat listings, depending on your settings.
Want to edit, pause, or cancel an alert?
You can review and manage your alerts by logging into your account and clicking Listing Alerts. This will bring up a list of your alerts by name. (You can also check current alert results here by clicking View Results.)
To modify the filters for an existing alert, click Modify Filters. This will take you back to the search page with your filters applied. After making changes, click Update Alert to save your changes.
To change the name or frequency of an alert, click Modify name / frequency. Don’t forget to click Save.
To pause an alert, click Deactivate / Unsubscribe. You’ll be able to start this alert up again any time by clicking Reactivate. Or, if you want to delete an alert permanently, you can click the trashcan icon. (You’ll be prompted to confirm the decision before it’s final.)
