CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

ETHOS

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Ethos is a private, not-for-profit organization that promotes the independence, dignity, and well-being of the elderly and disabled through the coordination and delivery of high-quality, affordable home and community- based care. Headquartered in Jamaica Plain, Ethos’ mission is to support family caregiving, foster a thriving community, and to integrate diversity and inclusivity.

Founded in 1973 as Southwest Boston Senior Services, the organization served as the city’s neighborhood- based not-for-profit organization devoted solely to keeping the elderly and disabled at home. One year later, it began operations out of a Roslindale storefront with a staff of four and funding for one elder lunch site and a Meals on Wheels route.

In 1997, after a period of exponential growth, Southwest Boston Senior Services changed its name to Ethos. Today, Ethos is a vibrant, diverse community of 150-employees and nearly 500 volunteers. Driven by self- determination and the mission to serve the elderly and disabled, Ethos is a state Aging Services Access Point (ASAP), an Elder Nutrition Project, and a Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Despite years of growth, Ethos remains rooted in the principles of care, compassion, and community that guided its founders.

Innovative, savvy, and committed, Ethos has achieved significant milestones over its forty-six-year history, receiving accolades from the MetLife Foundation and Root Cause and, in 2010, was featured in Gen Silent, a nationally acclaimed documentary on LGBT aging. A trend-setter and innovator in elder and disability services, Ethos has made notable contributions to supporting innovation, diversity, and inclusion within the elder care space, including launching Boston’s first-ever collaboration between City Hall and Boston ASAP to support elder nutrition city-wide; the Boston Elder Nutrition Program; founding the first “Haitian-friendly” service center, Sant Grandet; and opening New England’s first “LBTBQ-friendly” elder lunch sites, Café Emmanuel, Out2Brunch, Out4Supper, Café Pride, and AgeWell Equality. Ethos was recently tasked with providing 2.1 million meals through the Meals on Wheels program.

Additionally, Ethos:

  • Funnels $22 million each year into neighborhoodeconomies;
  • Funds jobs for 2000 direct careworkers;
  • Through their workforce interfaces withunions;
  • Engages 500 localvolunteers;
