Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing -- Katherine Hamm Center 

Start Date:   August 2019

The mission of the Atlanta Speech School is to help each person develop his or her full potential through language and literacy. Established in 1938, the Atlanta Speech School serves children and adults with speech, hearing, language, or learning disabilities through clinical and educational programs, in addition to providing professional development for teachers and educators in partner schools and preschools. All of our programs are built upon a foundation of caring instruction, based on proven research, and strengthened with a depth of academic and clinical knowledge.

The Katherine Hamm Center has an opening for a full-time classroom teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. The Katherine Hamm Center is a program for children from birth through elementary school who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Position Summary:

The teacher will provide excellent group experience to children who are deaf or hard of hearing, using an auditory verbal approach to develop communication. Therapeutic teaching takes place in a school setting with small groups. The teacher is responsible for evaluating, identifying appropriate goals, providing experiences to meet those goals, and reporting progress to parents.

Essential Duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement lessons for preschool-aged children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing with particular emphasis given to facilitating speech, aural habilitation/phonetic listening skills, and literacy development
  • Participate in parent conferences at least three times a year
  • Maintain an effective system for communicating with parents, colleagues, and outside personnel regarding children’s development
  • Work collaboratively with teachers of the deaf, audiologists, psychologists, and occupational therapists to ensure exemplary services are provided for each child

 

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Communication Disorders, or Speech-Language Pathology
  • Eligible for state certification
  • Strong understanding of auditory verbal principles, language and literacy development
  • Knowledge of cochlear implants, hearing aids and assistive listening devices
  • LSLS Certification preferred
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development is required.

This 190-day, full-time school position offers a generous benefit package including health/dental/life/vision and long term disability insurance; the School subsidizes health insurance premiums of staff and families. Salary:

Salary is commensurate with experience.
