Position Title: Child Advocate Paralegal
AGENCY: DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center (DCCAC) a department of DeKalb County Government
FLSA: Nonexempt
Status: Merit
POSITION SUMMARY
Provides paralegal, administrative and investigative support to attorneys and investigators in the representation of large child abuse and neglect caseloads. Works with Client Profiles® client database to create customized reports and statistical analysis of advocacy efforts. Provides extensive case management database system management. Conducts legal research and significant data entry in order to maintain comprehensive documentation of all case related efforts. Supports attorney’s trial preparation, child welfare investigations, and ongoing case management and monitoring of client status. Supports litigation and case management of large child abuse and neglect case loads. Supports outreach and advocacy efforts of department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Subpoenas, secures, reviews, summarizes and maintains reports, documents, and other evidence relevant to assigned cases. *
- Manages legal administrative responsibilities of large caseloads for complex litigation practice.*
- Conducts extensive data entry of case related efforts and information.*
- Maintains Client Profiles – a customized legal case management and information database. *
- Creates and manages automated legal forms system.*
- Writes, edits, and run SQL based queries to create customized statistical reports related to caseloads.*
- Acts as point of contact for external database provider and internal information systems department.*
- Conducts basic troubleshooting of department computer systems.
- Prepares pleadings, motions, subpoenas and other court documents in support of trial practice. *
- Ensures comprehensive maintenance of case file documentation. *
- Prepares investigative notes, findings and reports for reviewing attorney. *
- Adheres to departmental case management timelines.*
- Assists attorneys and investigators in documentation of all efforts on all cases. *
- Assists with field investigations, service of process and subpoenas and other field efforts, as directed.
- Maintains extensive documents and other evidence for litigation and case management purposes.*
- Maintains statistical and other departmental information *
- Assists department in other administrative and operational needs, as identified.
- Assists department in outreach efforts, programs and projects, as directed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Associates degree in Paralegal studies or comparable and transferrable work experience. Valid driver’s license. Type a minimum of 55 wpm. Moderate to expert computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint required. Attention to detail required. Experience managing Client Profiles or other computerize legal case management database strongly preferred. Experience conducting basic SQL queries strongly preferred. Experience managing a legal office and high volume practice is strongly preferred. Legal office administration, legal research and drafting of legal documents preferred. Knowledge of court system and child welfare system desired.

The DeKalb County Child Advocacy Center (DCCAC) represents the legal rights and best interests of abused and neglected children in dependency matters before the DeKalb County Juvenile Court. Child-clients are generally placed in the legal custody of the Department of Family and Children Services (foster care), and are physically placed in foster homes, group homes, and therapeutic institutions, or with biological and fictive relatives. DCCAC attorneys, investigators, and support staff investigate allegations of abuse and litigate dependency cases that are before the Juvenile Court. The DCCAC also provides ongoing case monitoring and advocacy by collaborating with multidisciplinary stakeholders to ensure that our clients' wellbeing needs are met and that permanent homes and caretakers are identified.
