Job Details

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the nation’s leading voice for respect, recognition and labor standards for domestic workers. Through leadership development, strategic campaigns and alliance building, we are building a powerful movement for social and global justice.  The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and currently represents over 60 affiliates in more than 30 cities. Since then, NDWA’s staff leadership has played key roles in national intersectional movements centering women’s rights, immigrant rights, and racial justice. In the last several years, the organization and its members have appeared in a wide variety of media outlets including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Buzzfeed, Vox, InStyle, and many others.

NDWA seeks an experienced Media Relations Director to develop and implement strategic press strategy with the goal of raising the visibility of the care workforce, NDWA, and its principal spokespeople to advance NDWA’s strategic priorities. The Director would strategize on national organizing and policy campaigns and develop staff and member spokespeople across new and traditional media outlets, including print, digital, TV, and radio. The Media Relations Director will be part of the communications team, working together to shift stereotypes and perceptions of domestic workers, amplify our core narrative and brand, and offer compelling humanizing and intersectional narratives to tell a new story of labor, gender, and race/ethnicity in our country.

The Media Relations Director reports to NDWA’s Communications Director, and manages press strategists and relevant media consultants.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a comprehensive media strategy with our core narrative and organizational priorities serving as its foundation.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key journalists, editors, producers, editorial boards, and publications.
  • Supervise staff and consultants under the Press Strategy work area.
  • Manage creative collaborations and long-form special projects, such as news documentaries and print media spreads.
  • Develop, pitch, and write stories, op-eds, and interviews.
  • Raise the profile of staff and member spokespeople in base media.
  • Access breaking news and support rapid response/crisis communications.
  • Create press materials, including media lists, press kits, and more.
  • Analyze press narratives to inform broader communication strategies and culture change.
  • Direct and manage the editorial process for consultants.
  • Coordinate onsite press management including staffing and roles.
  • Participate in regular NDWA activities, like staff meetings and retreats, and other duties as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 4+ years of professional communications expertise on the national level.
  • Experience managing staff, consultants and/or project teams.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to immigration reform, racial justice, gender equity and worker rights.
  • Understanding of issues facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and other communities of color and demonstrated commitment to racial, economic and gender justice, especially for women of color.
  • Experience working with impacted community members from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to organize time, manage up, work independently, as well as collaborate, coordinate, and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with members of the media.
  • Ability to work under high pressure and short deadlines.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English is a plus.
  • Ability to travel 40% of the time.
