Chief of Staff/Managing Director

Position Location: Brooklyn, NY strongly preferred

The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together CPD/A) promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 50 partner organizations in more than 38 states, Puerto Rico, and D.C., and build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. CPD/A is a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

CPD/A seeks a talented, experienced senior leader to serve as the organization's Managing Director.  The Managing Director directly supports the organization’s 4 Co-Executive Directors, staffs the Senior Leadership Team, and facilitates institutional alignment across internal teams and in furtherance of alignments across our network of affiliates.

The right candidate will be deeply committed to our mission, thrive on figuring out how to overcome challenges, and enjoy working to translate bold vision into effective program.  The role requires someone who enjoys building systems, engages effectively with staff, and sees internal-facing institutional work as deeply political and key to building our movement. The role connects at every level of the organization and fosters effective communication and information-sharing, and a focus on solving challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:

The exact contours of this role will be defined to complement other senior hires currently planned, including the Chief Operating Officer. Core pieces of the role will include:

  • Staffing the Executive Team, including joining meetings and retreats, ensuring effective information flow from the EDs out to appropriate staff, coordination of c3 and c4 Boards, and serving as a high-level confidante skilled at diplomacy and discretion;

  • Coordinating the Senior Leadership Team (planning meetings and retreats), which brings together the leaders of core internal teams, to move key institutional priorities including: annual goal setting and analysis of progress and impact; strategic planning; strategic decision making in light of limited resources; and alignment of programmatic work to our strategic vision;

  • Coordinating closely with the COO to support work on budgeting, human resources and staff development, and key staff engagement spaces (retreats, calls, etc.);

  • Coordinating closely with the Development Director to help ensure that our fundraising strategy aligns with the institutional vision;

  • Fundraising to further organizational priorities;

  • Coordinating across the organization to identify gaps in capacity and developing plans to fill those gaps in the short and long term; and

  • Serving as a formal and informal advisor to staff at all levels of the organization to help the organization continue to evolve.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

  • At least 10 years’ experience in progressive campaigns with community-based organizations, primarily on issues with explicit racial justice framing;

  • Experience working across departments or teams within a complex organization;

  • Experience managing large programs and projects;

  • Success designing systems that support mission-aligned work and which facilitate effective sharing of information internally;

  • Success as independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;

  • Fundraising experience (foundation and/or individual);

  • Legal compliance and financial management experience preferred;

  • Preference for candidates based in New York. Exceptions may be made for exceptional candidates.
