Director of Advancement
The American Federation for Aging Research, www.afar.org ; (AFAR), is a leading national non-profit organization whose mission is to support and advance healthy aging through biomedical research. Since 1981, AFAR has advanced basic research and breakthroughs in the science of healthy aging by awarding more than $178 million in support to talented MDs, PhDs, and students across the country. What AFAR supported scientists are learning today about the processes of aging will help us all live healthier, longer lives tomorrow—less susceptible to disease and disability.
AFAR is seeking a Director of Advancement. This individual will be responsible for the direction and implementation of the organization’s development activities, working closely with the Executive Director, and Director of Grants Programs to develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to expand its donor base and enlarge the scope of its programmatic activities in support of its mission.
Responsibilities
This individual is expected to set broad goals and translate them into achievable steps. Help set and manage appropriate fundraising expectations. Comprehend detailed, complex scientific concepts and problems, possess good decision making and problem solving skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of the management team in a small not for profit organization. Other specific responsibilities will be to:
- expand private and public government funding donor base to grow organizational grant awards programs
- secure financial support for scientific meetings, cultivation and special events and management of same
- create strategies to market organizational services to grow revenue stream
- leverage existing programs to develop new partnerships and collaborations
- cultivate and grow corporate and foundation donor base
- conduct wealth screenings and develop prospect portfolio
Qualifications
- minimum of Bachelor’s degree required, with preference given to public health or science degrees
- minimum of ten years fundraising experience at a disease specific or grant giving scientific research focused organization
- computer literate with knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or other major fundraising database
- knowledge of major prospecting software
- excellent grant and proposal writing skills required
- innovative and resourceful thinkers preferred
