Executive Director, AIR Serenbe, Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia

AIR Serenbe, the nonprofit artist residency program of the Serenbe Institute, invests in artists of all disciplines. We provide the time and space necessary for the development of new work, as well as focused public programming that brings audiences in close contact with creative processes and practices. Artists stay at The Art Farm at Serenbe in live/work cottages designed by Rural Studio, the award-winning program of Auburn University's School of Architecture.  Seasonally, we make a container studio available for use by artists who wish to work larger. Depending on the interests and projects of each artist, the studio can be opened to the public for open studio visits.

AIR Serenbe is overseen by an active volunteer board and works with a nation-wide advisory council.  The organization is a unit of The Serenbe Institute for Art, Culture & the Environment, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. The Institute’s mission is to cultivate the model community’s creative, intellectual and ecological qualities through programs promoting social, spiritual and aesthetic curiosity. It supports intellectual, social and artistic activities and the works produced by it, and is committed to serving Serenbe residents, neighbors of Chattahoochee Hills, artists and visitors.

AIR Serenbe seeks an Executive Director with experience, energy, and creativity to lead the organization.  The ideal candidate will have proven fund raising abilities, operational management knowledge, excellent interpersonal skills, and experience with audience-engaging programs.  One of the first tasks will be working closely with the Board to update the organization’s three-year strategic plan. An important part of this plan will be initiating a capital campaign to secure funding for additional cottages and studio space for AIR Serenbe.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred in related fields (the arts, museum studies, non-profit management, etc.)

  • A minimum of three years’ arts administration or management experience

  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary artistic practice

  • Fundraising track record, including experience in capital campaigns

  • Capability to provide solid leadership and strategic vision

  • Ability to work with a variety of constituents, including non-profit boards and practicing artists

  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

  • Experience in managing operations, including personnel matters, and in developing, managing and growing annual operating budget

 Job Summary

  • Develop and implement strategies to fulfill the organization’s mission of “nurturing critical moments of imagination”

  • Oversee annual operating plans for all programming

  • Prepare the annual operating budget and oversee financial operations

  • Develop and execute fundraising activities, looking to private and public sources

  • Develop, oversee, and manage a capital campaign

  • Hire, manage, and evaluate Operations Manager

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong board of directors

  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong national advisory council

  • Interact with artists-in-residence and serve as organization’s ambassador at all public events

Company

AIR Serenbe, the nonprofit artist residency program of the Serenbe Institute, invests in artists of all disciplines. We provide the time and space necessary for the development of new work, as well as focused public programming that brings audiences in close contact with creative processes and practices.

AIR Serenbe was founded in 2007 under the umbrella of the Serenbe Institute for Art, Culture & the Environment, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to bringing people together through art and nature. Driven to cultivate Serenbe as a place where art is created and connections between artists, people and nature would be nurtured, a group of Serenbe volunteers built a residency program out of a patchwork of rooms in private homes and a donated storefront studio. This humble beginning helped to distinguish and define AIR Serenbe as a program that gives artists the ability to engage with the larger community and share their creative process.

Artists stay in live/work cottages designed by Rural Studio, the award-winning program of Auburn University's School of Architecture. Our two cottages, located at The Art Farm at Serenbe, are models from Rural Studio's 20K House line.  We are pleased to partner with Rural Studio in their work to design beautiful and affordable small homes.  Learn more about the vision and work of Rural Studio at ruralstudio.org.
